Applications of FPGA Board

High-end video applications and the related fields of still image and computer graphics processing benefit from high performance in all of the fundamental constituents of digital processing. The Achronix Speedster® FPGA family delivers that performance across the board:

The video world is home to many distinct (and converging) standards – old and new, analog and digital, high and low resolution, television-centric, film-centric, computer-centric, etc. These standards differ in color-space standards, frame rates, resolution, aspect ratio, compression mechanism, and many other features. Most high-end installations will need to process various mixtures of these standards, often in real time.

While video and image editing tends to be a software-intensive activity, real-time processing requires hardware. For such applications, both reprogrammability and high performance (available with the Speedster family) are necessary attributes of a suitable platform.

Key examples of such real-time video/graphic applications are:

  • Video switches
  • Video networking routers
  • Format conversion such as aspect ratio, scan lines, and chroma subsampling
  • Compression and decompression including MPEG2, H.264, and JPEG2000
  • Image processing such as studio cameras and high-end projection systems

Specific types of processing used include:

  • Cosine transformation used during Video Compression
  • Image manipulation such as conversion, scaling, keystoning, and rotation
  • Color space conversion
  • Blending the brightness, contrast and luminance of multiple images

In high-end display technology, for example, a multiple input system needs to perform decoding, scaling, and scan conversion on many video streams, before combining them into a single stream.

These parallel activities require:

  • Fast memory for frame buffers
  • Fast multipliers and adders for image manipulation and conversion
  • Fast logic to stitch these functions together and to control them
  • Fast I/Os to get the constituent signals into and out of the FPGA device
